Humans are digitizing more and more aspects of society. Software is becoming the infrastructure of our society. Even rules get encoded as software, think about smart contracts as an example.
The UNESCO wants to preserve software and its evolution through the Software Heritage project by Roberto Di Cosmo and Stefano Zacchiroli.
The project description states: “The long term goal of the Software Heritage initiative is to collect all publicly available software in source code form together with its development history, replicate it massively to ensure its preservation, and share it with everyone who needs it.”
I felt very proud to find source code of our Open Data Hub project listed in the UNESCO Software Heritage, already!
