FOSDEM 2019 – Free Open Source Developers European Meeting

It has become a tradition for software developers to meet up at FOSDEM in Brussels in the beginning of the year. This year we met on 2 & 3 February.

We started in the Alps escaping from a snowfall to reach Brussels, where snow was falling as well.

The conference is a huge gathering of digital experts from all over the world and the ideal opportunity to meet old friends and create new once.

Karen Sandler & Bradley M. Kuhn about living in Full Software Freedom

I am impressed about how many friends from South Tyrol have discovered FOSDEM as a meeting opportunity. There attended friends from the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, from Marketing Factory, from NOI Techpark, from Raiffeisen Informationssystem – RIS, from the Realgymnasium Meran, from Würth-Phoenix and many more… Some others are working and living abroad and we all used lunch and dinner breaks to meet and share stories about our experiences in the digital world.

At the venue developers use the booth area at building K as a meeting point.

At the FSFE booth I discovered a “Free Software Free Society” Hoodie in navy blue! Maybe it will become available at the online shop as well.

To get to the ULB Campus many use public transport like the bus or the tram. In Brussels also bike-sharing services are available and even e-scooter sharing systems like lime, too.

Many of us come to FOSDEM to get inspired by talks about Free Software in our digital society.

I really enjoy the Lightning Talks Track, which provides an opportunity to get many inspiring inputs from a brought range of topics like Food, Music, Shell commands, …

Pau Pérez about the Open Food Network
Peter Jonas about open-sourcing music digitizing and releasing it as CC0
Igor Chubin about console oriented services
Nicolas Auvray about the libre real-time strategy game 0 A.D.
Markus Koschany about Debian Java Insights and Challenges
Avital Tzubeli about Automating Client Library Generation

A very brought range of topics to get inspired from. The FOSDEM and its speakers will for sure be an inspiration for the next SFScon – South Tyrol Free Software Conference, which is scheduled for November 15th, 2019.

And of course, I am looking forward to the next FOSDEM, already!
